Sclerotherapy (Vein Injection)

Sclerotherapy (Vein Injection)

Sclerotherapy is a safe, well-proven procedure that has been performed for over fifty years. The procedure is performed in the office, and takes fifteen to thirty minutes, after which, there is no limitation in activity. The sessions usually continue on a weekly basis until the desired outcome has been achieved.

Sclerotherapy involves an injection of a solution directly into a vein. The solution irritates the inner lining of the blood vessel causing it to swell and stick together. Compression bandages (as well as a stocking) are placed over the sites treated. Over time, the vessels become absorbed by the body, which causes them to fade from view.

Some of the solutions used in Sclerotherapy are hypertonic saline, Sotradecol® or Polidaconol, all of which are “sclerosing” agents that act through different mechanisms of action.

Sclerotherapy treatments are best performed in the fall, winter and spring months since it is necessary to use a compression stocking and avoid sun exposure afterwards.

Sclerotherapy, performed by Dr. Michael F. Gioscia, board-certified surgeon… you’ll be pleased with the results.
