Radiofrequency vein ablation refers to a convenient in-office procedure developed to remove unwanted veins. Radiofrequency vein ablation works especially well for varicose veins.

Dr. Gioscia provides innovative treatments and solutions, such as the VNUS Closure® radiofrequency vein ablation procedure — a less painful and less invasive alternative to vein stripping and the traditional surgical vein removal.

Why would I choose radiofrequency vein ablation?

You might choose radiofrequency ablation for a number of reasons. For example, if you’re unhappy with the appearance of twisted and bulging visible varicose veins on your legs, radiofrequency vein ablation might be a promising option for you.

Varicose veins and broken problem veins typically signal underlying health issues with your circulatory system. Removing these broken veins can improve your circulatory system and enhance blood flow through your healthy veins by removing malfunctioning veins.

Dr. Gioscia might suggest radiofrequency vein ablation to ease symptoms like swelling, pain, and irritation. During your personal consultation, Dr. Gioscia helps you determine if this procedure is the right choice for you.

How does radiofrequency vein ablation work?

With radiofrequency vein ablation, Dr. Gioscia uses special radiofrequency energy to cauterize (using heat) and close unwanted veins. Radiofrequency ablation is an image-guided and minimally invasive treatment. The procedure involves the use of an ultrasound machine, catheter, laser fiber or radiofrequency electrode, and console.

Dr. Gioscia applies a numbing cream to the area and cleans, sterilizes, and covers the area with a surgical drape.

He then makes a small skin incision at the site and uses ultrasound guidance to insert a catheter through your skin to position it within the abnormal vein. Dr. Gioscia carefully inserts the electrode or fiber through the catheter and uses ultrasound guidance to inject local anesthetic around your abnormal vein. Radiofrequency energy heats your vein and seals it as Dr. Gioscia slowly withdraws the catheter.

Dr. Gioscia applies pressure to prevent any bleeding and covers the opening in your skin with a bandage. No sutures are needed.

You might feel slight pressure when Dr. Gioscia inserts the catheter, but there’s no serious discomfort. After your procedure, your body’s natural lymphatic system gets rid of the problem vein.
